Cord Bound

I think the cord bound book is one of the best looking books when done but is also one of the hardest to do well. Above is a cord bound book that I finished and the other book is what it looks like without the book cloth and end papers. Each folio is sewn around the cords and then the cord are glued to the cover.

Hidden Message

This phone print was a lot of fun to make but also very difficult. I started with a line etching and then stated the 3 different aquatints. The first one I just stop out for different tone. The second I spay painted to get gradient and third was multiple layers of spit bite.

I have been slacking with my blogging but here is another of my phone prints. The phone was based on a candle stick phone highly stylized with much of the symbols used in other prints. The line etching was done using acrylic floor wax as my hard ground and the background was done with an aquatint then using a stencil I spray painted the areas I wanted stopped out.

Can't Hear

Well since my last phone print I have tried staying with the same subject but change the meaning and mood of the print. The print is an intaglio print using aquatint and line etching and for the gradient I used litho pencil on the aquatint.

As a side note this print is for sale click the link to buy and see the others

Long Stitch

The Long Stitch is another binding style it refers to the long stitch down the spine of the book. This style is most commonly seen covered in leather. I wanted to try something different then leather and I had some black canvas and green buttons so I serged the edges and sewed on the the buttons.

Stab Binding

This is another book I made in Book Arts. This book is a stab bound book often made for portfolios or photo albums. One of the nice things about this book is that it is easy to add or remove pages as needed.

Marble Paper

Recently in my Book Arts class we were able to marble our own paper. This was a lot of fun for me since I am into printmaking and marbling paper is like monotype prints. I had so much fun in fact I was able to talk my wife into coming in the next day and make more marbled paper. Not all the paper came out as hoped but with practice I think I will get better at it. The top picture is all the marble paper that we did and the 3 following pictures are of my favorites.

Book 2

This was the second book for my class. The cover I used manila folder and cover it with a nice scrap booking paper that a friend had given me. The inside paper was torn down to 4 folios in 4 signatures.

Fisher of Men

This print was a lot of fun to make and it really is the print that got me thinking of symbols. In this print I used a lot of symbols, all base on Christianity. I used different techniques to create this print, line etching, aquatint, and a little engraving.

Pamphlet

I am taking a book arts class and in the class we learn to hand make books. A pamphlet was the very first book we had to make for the class. For the cover I used a mono type print that I made in my printmaking class.

Orphan Works

H.R. 5889 The Orphan Works Act of 2008

S 2913 The Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act of 2008

This bill is very upsetting to me and I feel that we as a people need to fight this bill. In short this bill states that any visual image (home videos, a photo of your child, a painting, a sketch) can be taken and use commercially if they have provided a reasonably diligent search in good faith for the copyright owner in a registry that does not yet even exist. That means that we would have to spend thousands of dollars personally to protect our works from being used incorrectly. Not only that but we still would not have the rights to stop them form using the image because all they have to do is pay a reasonable fee for your work determined by the user and not the copyright holder (you).

The link provided below is a list of letters that are pre-written and you put you info at the bottom and then are sent to your senator and house rep.

Melanie

A family in my ward had seen me doing some caricature while sitting in my ward and they asked if I could do a drawing of there child. At first it was going to be in the style of a caricature but in the end they wanted something more realistic so they gave me a photo to use for the charcoal drawing. They also wanted it to be smaller somewhere around 5" tall but I ended up making the drawing much larger, closer to 16" tall. Now it is framed and hanging in there child's room and it looks great.

Waiting

So far my printmaking class has been a lot of fun. This print I based off a previous print called "Waiting" as well. The phone and other objects in the print have faith driven symbolism that is intentional.

Sketch Book

During my printmaking class my teacher also taught me how to make a sketch book from scratch. I used mohawk paper and tore it into the right size. I then folded the paper and sewed all the paper together. I used leather and book cloth to cover the outside. In the inside I used my lino blocks to print my end papers.

Waiting

A mezzotint test print. A mezzotint is created using a tool with curved and pointed tip that is rocked side to side in 12 different directions making dips and burrs in the copper. Once you have done that step you scape or burnish in the parts you want left light.

Late But In Earnest 2nd State

This is the second state of this plate. I recently applied an aquatint to the plate to get different values.

The Boxer

A Test print of The Boxer. This print is a dry point print so I didn't use any chemicals just a carbide tip needle to etch the copper plate.

Late But In Earnest

An intaglio test print. This print is based off a family crest that my mother had designed. I used a copper plate ecthed in non-toxic ferric chloride. The process is rather time consuming but I really enjoy it.

Falling Man

A bronze sculpture of a man laying back. In this piece I wanted a man that was supported at three points. I also wanted everything to be dramatic, the pose, the mussels and even the base which is reflective.

Thanksgiving Flyer

A flyer I did for our church event just before thanksgiving. At the event we had those willing church members get up and do a talent and there also were tables to show off crafts people had done.
